Big Screen Power Couples

For the first time in what feels like forever – although it’s only been six years – Julia Roberts and George Clooney are starring side-by-side in a film, once again bringing their larger-than-life personalities to packed cinemas across the country. But instead of planning daring heists in Las Vegas, dealing with dangerous minds or defeating a money monster, the pair star in new romantic comedy TICKET TO PARADISE, now playing at AMC Theaters.

When the power couple reunited on the big screen to tell the story of two divorced parents trying to sabotage their daughter’s wedding, it reminded us of their previous movies, as well as other famous pairings that have made movie magic over the years have created. Featuring duos like Hanks/Ryan, Thompson/Jordan, Bardem/Cruz and more, the big screen has seen its fair share of great romance, drama and adventure over the years. Now let’s dive into some of them…

Julia Roberts and George Clooney

Since 2001, Julia Roberts and George Clooney have appeared in four films together – OCEAN’S ELEVEN, CONFESSIONS OF A DANGEROUS MIND, OCEAN’S TWELVE and MONEY MONSTER – before reuniting for Ol Parker’s romantic comedy TICKET TO PARADISE. As one of the most prolific screen duos of the 21st century, and possibly of all time, the two Hollywood A-listers have tremendous chemistry and are capable of playing characters who treat each other as if they’ve known each other for entire lives.

While it’s true that Roberts has had some great pairings with the likes of Richard Gere, Hugh Grant and John Cusack over the years, it’s hard to think of a better actor than Clooney to star alongside the Oscar® winner, and vice versa .

Meg Ryan and Tom Hanks

Having a list of power couples on the big screen that doesn’t include Meg Ryan and Tom Hanks is like making a list of best romantic comedies without Sleepless in Seattle or You’ve Got Mail. Technically, you could do both without the on-screen dynamic couple who fell in love over the radio before meeting in a chat room five years later, but where’s the fun in that?

Another film starring the duo Meg Ryan and Tom Hanks that doesn’t get as much voiced as the two Nora Ephron classics is John Patrick Shanley’s 1990 surrealist comedy JOE VERSUS THE VOLCANO, in which Hanks played a neurotic clerk who agrees sacrificing himself to Ryan, who plays not one, not two, but three different characters.

Javier Bardem and Penelope Cruz

Javier Bardem and Penelope Cruz, unlike the other big screen power couples on this list, are a real power couple off screen as well as in real life. Since they first shared the screen in Bigas Luna’s 1992 romantic comedy JAMÓN JAMÓN, the pair have appeared in multiple films together in nearly every decade since.

With titles like VICKY CRISTINA BARCELONA, LOVING PABLO and EVERYBODY KNOWS starring the couple, who wed in 2010, it’s easy to see they have just as much chemistry on screen as they do in real life. Additionally, they have each won an Oscar throughout their careers, with Bardem taking home an Oscar for NO COUNTRY FOR OLD MEN and Cruz taking home one for her work in VICKY CRISTINA BARCELONA.

Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone

Since first appearing side by side in the 2011 romantic comedy CRAZY, STUPID, LOVE, Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone have found themselves at the center of a trio of feature films, each set in a different genre. Two years after falling in love with Glenn Ficarra and John Requa’s modern-classic rom-com, Gosling and Stone teamed up again for Ruben Fleischer’s crime thriller GANGSTER SQUAD.

A few years later, Gosling and Stone reappeared together in their most successful pairing to date in Damien Chazelle’s musical LA LA LAND, in which the on-screen couple played two young lovers trying to balance romance and their own personal dreams in the “town.” the Stars”.

Tessa Thompson and Michael B Jordan

Tessa Thompson and Michael B. Jordan first shared the screen with the 2015 release of Ryan Coogler’s CREED, which not only continued the dormant ROCKY franchise but also gave the boxing film a new and refreshing twist. In the film, Jordan played Adonis Johnson, an aspiring boxer who first tries to escape the ghost of his late father, Apollo Creed (Carl Weathers), before continuing his legacy in and out of the ring.

Tessa Thompson’s Bianca was an important part of CREED’s incredibly emotional story, and her relationship with the boxer would lead to some of the greatest moments in the film and its sequel, CREED II. The two will share screens again in CREED III, which is set to launch on March 3, 2023.

Jennifer Lawrence and Bradley Cooper

Between 2012 and 2015, Jennifer Lawrence and Bradley Cooper, both incredibly busy at the time, appeared in four films side by side, all but one directed by David O. Russell.

It all started with the suspenseful romantic comedy SILVER LININGS PLAYBOOK, which earned Lawrence an Academy Award® and a Golden Globe® and earned Cooper a slew of nominations. Next came the 2013 crime thriller, AMERICAN HUSTLE, which earned Lawrence another Golden Globe. The pair reprized romantic characters in 2014’s SERENA before teaming up again with Russell in 2015 for JOY, the biographical comedy about Miracle Mop creator Joy Mangano.
