How to watch Will Smith’s new film Emancipation on Apple TV+

Will Smith stars in Emancipation streaming now on Apple TV+. Smith plays a slave making a dangerous and grueling escape from captivity who was later photographed and became the face of the growing emancipation movement. How to see the new film.

Emancipation is one of Apple’s biggest original film endeavors to date, having acquired the project in a deal worth over $100 million in 2020. Actor Will Smith has previously declined to make a “slave film” but said he accepted starring in the project as it focuses on a “story about freedom.” Production on the film wrapped up last year, with asking prices in sight.

However, Smith’s public outburst at the Oscars, which included the televised stroke, complicated matters. For a time it was unclear if Emancipation would even come out. But Apple has committed to a 2022 release as originally planned, even if its chances at the awards show are severely limited.

What is “Emancipation” about?

Emancipation is declared in 1863. President Lincoln would officially free the slaves with a proclamation earlier this year, but it would take months for word to spread and for the order to be accepted by every state in the US. Peter (Smith’s character) still lives as a slave and is subjected to daily cruelty.

Peter embarks on a dangerous journey to escape his captor and return to his family. To do this, you must wade through the swamps of Louisiana. He eventually links up with the Union Army.

He later became known as “whipped Peter” when a photo showing his badly scarred back from the floggings was widely circulated, helping to hasten the culture shift away from slavery. The film’s narrative is fictional but inspired by these photographs.
