We have all been beset by random thoughts at different times of the day. However, Naomi Osaka takes it to a whole new level. The Japanese star had some extremely random and weird thoughts, caused by TV commercials, that popped into her head at the most unexpected of times – during her tennis practice sessions. She once revealed how her mind wandered during an exercise session.
Osaka said she once saw a commercial about the disease mesothelioma and was suddenly reminded of it during an on-pitch training session. She just couldn’t figure out why she was thinking about the commercial while engaged in the intense practice session.
Speaking about the hilarious incident during a press conference, the Japanese player admitted that her mind often “wanders” during matches and was further questioned about it.
“Oh God. Well, you know, once I practiced, right, and my whole practice — you know, there’s this commercial that says, “If you or a loved one has been diagnosed with mesothelioma,” that’s all I could during think about it throughout the workout. I thought, why do I keep thinking that?” said Naomi Osaka in the 2020 season.
After she got rid of the thought of the mesothelioma ad, another ad randomly came to her mind. While she had a decent workout, the Japanese superstar called it a “strange day”.
“Then during the breaks all I could see was like this commercial where this woman was running in a field. I mean it was a good exercise, it was just my mind not there. I think it was just muscle memory and stuff. It was a weird day,” added the 25-year-old.
Naomi Osaka’s weirdness isn’t limited to random thoughts about TV commercials
While the TV commercial incident came out of nowhere, Naomi Osaka also has some quirky superstitions on the tennis court. Earlier this year, Osaka was spotted stepping on the giant “Melbourne logo” on the pitch at the Rod Laver Arena at the Australian Open. Then she went back and walked around the logo, being careful not to step on it again.
When asked about it later, Osaka admitted to having a superstition when it came to the baseline and the Melbourne logo. She also revealed that she had a Rafael Nadal-like obsession with keeping her water bottles in a certain position during the change.
“Honestly, I’ve always been like this,” Naomi Osaka said when asked about the logo incident during a press conference. “Every time I’ve come here I really don’t like stepping on the lines or the Melbourne logo in the background. I’m not really sure why that developed.”
“I would say that most athletes have very strong superstitions. It could be one thing, it could be two things. For me it’s definitely the lines and the logo. Also, my water bottles have to be perfectly straight,” she added.
