pills calls health team; Anthone is moving into the private sector

Governor-elect Jim Pillen appointed department chiefs at the Department of Health and Human Services on Monday and announced that Dr. Gary Anthone, as the state’s chief medical officer and director of public health, will depart to pursue a private sector position in Omaha.

dr Matthew Donahue, the state epidemiologist, will serve as acting chief medical officer until a replacement is appointed.

Pillen appointed Charity Menefee director of the Public Health Division, Tony Green director of the Developmental Disabilities Division, and Kevin Bagley director of the Medicaid and Long-Term Care Division.

The governor-elect said he would conduct national searches to find department heads for behavioral health and for children and family services. These directors are Sheri Dawson and Stephanie Beasley, respectively.

“I want Dr. Thank you Anthone for all his hard work and resilience during the COVID-19 pandemic,” Pillen said.

“Through his leadership, Nebraska has had one of the best and most efficient responses to the pandemic,” he said.

Pillen previously announced the reappointment of Dannette Smith as CEO of the Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services.

Smith will become interim director of Children and Family Services and Green will become interim director of Behavioral Health.

La Dallas Mitchell is working overtime to take care of her daughter. “It was just non-stop,” Mitchell said.
