Before the middle of the last decade in Portugal it was extremely rare for partners to move between the top 20 law firms. The battle for talent seems to be a trend that will continue and this year was no exception as Iberian Lawyer highlighted 11 partner changes. In addition, since January 2022 (until November 15, 2022), 34 lawyers have been promoted to the partnership in their respective offices. This data comes from official statements from law firms or from the editorial team’s collection of information published on LinkedIn. Of the 45 new partners, M&A is the most significant practice at 16%, followed by energy at 13%, real estate at 7%, and banking, tax and TMT, all accounting for 4% of the new partners.
WHO WAS THE MOST ACTIVE?
Vieira de Almeida and Abreu Advogados were leaders in 2022, with each firm welcoming five new lawyers to their respective partnerships. They promoted at the VDA Francisco Cabral Matos, Inês Antas de Barros, Maria Cunha Matos and Pedro Correa de Oliveira (link here). Cabral Matos and Antas de Barros have both been with the company for 15 years. Younger attorneys who have been and will be tempted to switch to competing firms may want to note that the traditional route to partnership is still possible for staff willing to put in the time and patience. The VDA’s other new partner in 2022 was one of the most memorable of the year. In January 2022, Francisco Sa Carneiro with 35 years of experience in the M&A market, joined by CS’Associados (link here).
Abreu promoted Diogo Pereira Duarte, Hugo Teixeira and Mary Santa Martha (link here). Two other new partners there were both career changers. They strengthened their criminal team with the incorporation of the associated partner Jose Maria Formosinho Sanchezwho came from PLMJ (link here). Bruno Azevedo Rodrigues is the latest partner at Abreu, with the firm announcing his appointment on November 10, coming from Telles (link here). The lawyer strengthened the Projects & Structured Finance department of the law firm. Azevedo Rodrigues is a big name in the market, having previously worked at Miranda & Associados and DLA Piper ABBC.
