RIT is developing an interdisciplinary master’s degree in artificial intelligence

The Rochester Institute of Technology is offering a new master’s degree in artificial intelligence (AI). The program will start in autumn 2023 and registration is now possible.

The Master of Science degree aims to prepare students from diverse educational backgrounds to become versatile AI professionals. Graduates develop skills to design, develop and deploy AI systems and to understand and analyze the impact of AI on society and politics.

“AI is now used extensively in our society – it has moved from the labs to our homes and work environments,” said Cecilia Alm, professor at RIT’s Department of Psychology and joint program director of the master’s program in AI. “For this reason, the industry is looking for well-rounded AI experts who understand both the algorithms and the implications of these technologies.”

To meet these needs, RIT creates a holistic program that is interdisciplinary and has technical rigor. The cooperatively implemented program draws on the strengths of the entire university. Housed within the Golisano College of Computing and Information Sciences, it also draws on faculty expertise from the College of Liberal Arts, the College of Science, and the Kate Gleason College of Engineering.

“Our graduates have an understanding of the technical and scientific foundations of AI as well as valuable experience with the practical application of AI,” said Alm. “The students also have the opportunity to explore future areas of AI and to analyze the social impact, they might have.”

Core courses of the program focus on AI fundamentals, mathematical methods, ethics, machine learning (including deep learning), and research methods. Students will also choose electives that tailor their experience to specific areas of AI. While some students focus on longstanding traditions in AI—including machine learning, natural language processing, robotics, or computer vision—others may study areas such as sociotechnical AI analysis and policy or neuromorphic computing.

Students in the AI ​​program also benefit from experiential learning and gain career-enhancing experience through project-based coursework. In a capstone or optional thesis, students apply their skills to assess and investigate a specific area of ​​artificial intelligence.

The new RIT degree program comes at a time when technology companies are seeking highly skilled AI talent, including senior AI software developers, AI design researchers, AI policy analysts, and machine learning engineers. The World Economic Forum, in its 2020 Future of Jobs Report, predicts that 97 million new artificial intelligence jobs will be created by 2025 as humans and intelligent systems increasingly solve problems together. More than 40 countries have created national strategic plans for AI as they struggle for AI success.

“Due to the growing demand for AI workers in society and industry sectors, this degree is open to people from a wide range of backgrounds — not just computer scientists and mathematicians,” said Matt Huenerfauth, dean of RIT’s Golisano College of Computing and Information Sciences.

The 30-credit-hour graduate program typically lasts two years. In addition to the on-campus program starting in fall 2023, the organizers plan to also offer a full online version of the program starting in fall 2024.
