San Antonio Spurs show no signs of tanking during NBA season

Spurs don’t get much national media attention these days, but they’ve started making a bit of noise early in the 3-2 season. That’s not exactly the record of a team that should be tanking, because well… they don’t.

David Thorpe brought it up on Monday 24th October episode of Bring it in Truehoop’s bi-weekly podcast. Thorpe made a career in individual player development, coaching NBA players such as Udonis Haslem and Kevin Martin. He also wrote for ESPN for several years before joining startup Truehoop.

He then pointed out the dangers of a tank team. The habits and culture that develop when a team is actively trying to lose becomes noticeably difficult to shake once the tank job is complete. That’s why the Spurs don’t do it. And Thorpe has a source who thinks the NBA could reward them for it.

“I have a friend who is a very powerful and influential guy in the NBA. A senior NBA influencer, that’s all I’ll say… he thinks Spurs will get Victor [Wembanyama]’ Thorpe said. “I’m like, ‘Well, they have a 14 percent chance if they know [finish in the] bottom three.’”

These are the odds for the NBA draft lottery. Thorpe went on to explain what the unnamed influencer meant and explained that there could be more to it.

“He’s like, ‘No, no, no, this league is going to take care of the team that gets it right. They coach their boys, they try to win,'” Thorpe said.
